Google’s Project Tango

The future is awesome

After making huge strides in the innovative Google Glass (wearable computer), search engine giant Google is now embarking on a new project titled 'Tango', which is expected to revolutionize 3D viewing technology in smartphones.
Google's new project Tango is taking shape at the ATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects), a division of the formerly owned company Motorola Mobility (now set to be acquired by Lenovo).
"The goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion," said Johnny Lee, ATAP member.
Tango is a 5.0-inch prototype smartphone that comes equipped with customized hardware and software, capable of tracking full 3D motion of the device, while simultaneously generating maps of the surrounding space. The sensors are capable of making more than 250 thousand 3D measurements per second, continuously creating real-time single 3D-model of the environment around the user.
Five things you could do with a phone that maps your room
Shopping: Google mentions on the Project Tango page that the device could have big implications for shoppers, whether they’re shopaholics or folks who just like to get in and out as quickly as possible. Having an indoor map of the store in your hand could make shopping trips more efficient by leading you directly to the shelf you want. The firm also mentions that you could use the phone to map the inside of your own room before heading out to buy furniture. IKEA already has an app like this, but this would presumably work for those adults who’ve moved beyond flatpack furniture.
Directions: By extension, one could also see Project Tango working at other times when you need directions inside a building or structure that current mapping solutions just don’t provide. How many times have you tried to get to a government building, for example, only to be dropped off at some imposing front door with no idea how to get to the right room inside the building? Indoor directions on this scale could cut down on the time you’re wandering in hallways to get you to your appointments on time.
Help for the visually-impaired: The phone also has great implications for the visually-impaired community — something Google mentions explicitly in its video and on its Web site. For example, the visually-impaired could use the phone to map out the room and use some kind of software to get alerts about obstacles — giving them an easier way to navigate through unfamiliar territory.
Emergency response: Those working on Google’s Project Glass have already looked into ways to use that technology to help emergency response workers such as firefighters find their way through buildings by projecting the blueprints onto the screen that hovers over the eyes of Glass users.Using something like Project Tango to map out a room as it is — not only how it’s supposed to be — has the potential to provide valuable information in situations where knowing the exact layout of a room can be a matter of life or death.
Augmented reality gaming: Google also devotes a bit of space on its Web site to postulating what this sort of device could do for gaming, particularly if one could combine the room-mapping with augmented reality.“Imagine competing against a friend for control over territories in your own home with your own miniature army,” Google said on its Project Tango Web site. Mapping in-game textures onto your real walls — either through the smartphone or a wearable device such as Glass — would arguably produce the best game of Cops and Robbers in history.

FACEBOOK TO BUY WHATSAPP FOR $19 BILLION

New York: Facebook is buying mobile messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion in cash and stock, by far the company's largest acquisition and bigger than any that Google, Microsoft or Apple have ever done

Facebook has posted on its blog, detailing the reasoning behind the acquisition, as well. The post notes that WhatsApp will continue to operate independently and retain its brand. In addition, WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum will join Facebook’s board.
In that sense, the acquisition makes sense for 10-year-old Facebook as it looks to attract its next billion users while keeping its existing 1.23 billion members, including teenagers, interested. The company has said it will develop a "multi-app" strategy, creating its own applications that exist outside of Facebook and acquiring others.
“WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO in a statement.
” Zuckerberg continued in a post to his Facebook page, “so I’m thrilled that they chose to work with us. I’m looking forward to what Facebook and WhatsApp can do together, and to developing great new mobile services that give people even more options for connecting. I’ve also known Jan for a long time, and I know that we both share the vision of making the world more open and connected. I’m particularly happy that Jan has agreed to join the Facebook board and partner with me to shape Facebook’s future as well as WhatsApp’s.

In comparison, Google's biggest deal, Motorola Mobility, stood at $12.5 billion, while Microsoft's largest was Skype at $8.5 billion. Apple, meanwhile, has never done a deal above $1 billion.

The world's biggest social networking company said on Wednesday that it is paying $12 billion in Facebook stock and $4 billion in cash for WhatsApp. In addition, the app's founders and employees - 55 in all - will be granted restricted stock worth $3 billion that will vest over four years after the deal closes.

A software to track how far emails have 'travelled'

Inventor Jonah Brucker-Cohen has developed a new technology which uses GPS technology to calculate the number of miles an email has travelled before reaching an inbox. The system known as Email Miles tracks an email and lets one know where a message was sent from and where it was received. It then calculates the total distance between the two and displays it on the screen alongside a map.
Inventor Jonah Brucker-Cohen, a design lecturer, said he hoped that it would remind people how quickly they can communicate in a digital world, The Times reported. The system also shows how indirect the route of many emails can be. An email sent from New York to Dakar, in Senegal demonstrates how the system works.
It first travelled 790 miles (1,271 km) to a server in Chicago, Illinois, and then went 2,163 miles (3,481 km) to Mountain View, California; 1,699 miles (2,734 km) to Dallas, Texas; 4,745 miles (7,636 km) to London; and finally 2,718 miles (4,374 km) to its destination – some 12,115 miles (19,497 km) in all.

Brucker-Cohen said the system does all of its time and distance calculations using the internet and a coordinate mapping system. “When all of the mileage amounts are tallied, it adds them all and provides the user with a map, the countries, continents and miles the email travelled,” Brucker-Cohen said.

NOKIA'S FIRST ANDROID PHONE -THE "NOKIA X" AN EXPERIMENT OR REVENGE?

THE NOKIA X, WEAPON OF NOKIA AGAINST THE CURRENT SMARTPHONE VENDORS

Before the  MWC(MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS) press conference, many details were leaked about nokia"s first Android smartphone, code named Normandy and likely to be called the Nokia X.
Nokia and Microsoft hope that devices like  Normandy will be bought for first-time smartphone users, one of the important fact will help nokia is, Nokia’s brand value and trust that still exists in the entry and mid-level devices in emerging markets. The promise of “Android” could help Nokia target those potential buyers who are not considering Windows Phone, which till now took Nokia completely out of the picture.

WHAT ACTUALLY NOKIA IS DOING......
Nokia is utilizing Google’s Android Open Source Platform (AOSP) that does not come with any Google’s services. Smartphone vendors pay a license fee to Google to get services like the Google’s Play app store, Google Maps, Gmail and others. However, Nokia won’t use any of Google’s services and will instead implement its own and Microsoft services, which means it won’t have to pay Google any licensing fee. Nokia has already developed its own app store for the platform and sources tell ,that they already have most of the top 100 apps on the store. Nokia will replace Google Maps with its own HERE maps while Gmail will be replaced by Microsoft’s Outlook and Google search by Bing. The device will also have Skype pre-installed, which would replace Google Hangouts.

PRICING....
It was always likely that the Nokia device would be placed in the affordable end of the market, simply because the high end of the smartphone market is highly crowded to say the least. But the information seeping out from the recent leaks also indicates that Nokia will target the smartphone at a similar price point to the previously released Nokia Asha; thus, we have a good idea of at what price point the Normandy will retail.latest update is coming from a Vietnamese online retailer . Vietnamese online retailer Techrum.vn has listed Nokia X on its website at a price of 2.2 mill to 2.5 mill VND (approximately $110). This is the first time that the pricing of the device has been revealed, while its specifications were leaked online over three months ago

SOME OF THE LEAKED SPECS OF THE NOKIA X.....
According to earlier reports, Nokia X will have a 4-inch screen with 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor, 512MB RAM, 5MP camera, Bluetooth 4.0, Android 4.4 (KitKat) operating system and 4GB internal storage. It is said to be a dual-sim smartphone and come in six colour options. The Finish manufacturer has scheduled an event for February 24 - the first day of MWC 2014 - where it is expected to take the covers off of Nokia X.

LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS......
After a couple of years , it will be interesting to see how this device performs, and i’ll keep my eyes open for more updates in the near future.
From the above information it is clear that microsoft is going to use normandy as a google killer. We will know on 24 Feb what is going to happen, up to what extent does it affects google or the current smartphone vendors....
